The Working Student Program
The working students have a great opportunity to gain valuable hands on experience of many aspects of the equine industry. Some students are able to do internships and gain credit for their apprenticeship. The length of time a student can devote is often adjusted to the situation. It is recommended 6 to 12 months but summers or shorter times can be arranged. The students get involved in all aspects breeding, foaling, training, sales, showing and the daily operation of the farm. Most students ride a lot and receive daily instruction based on developing horses. Many of the working students have gone on to be professionals. Some of them are: Kim Mulligan, Michele Clopp, Cara Hossenstab, Ian McCartney, Samath Erickson, Stacy Torelli, only to name a few.
The students are housed on site in the “student house” located near the barn. It is a non-paid position but living expenses are covered. Students can bring a horse at a reduced board rate and have the opportunity to show. We also assist the students in job placement. Being a working student is a great way for young adults to transition into the professional equestrian world.
